Spot reducing is a myth, we cannot pick and choose where we would like to lose fat. Everybody is different and we tend to store fat in slightly different places. The body will decide as to where the fat comes off first so doing sit ups won't speed up the loss of belly fat. You just need to make sure you are in a calorie deficit and eventually you will lose the fat in your chosen area as your overall body fat decreases.
A calorie deficit is simply the term used to describe a negative energy balance (Consuming less energy than our body needs). A calorie deficit is what we need to create in order to lose weight, a small deficit (200-500 calories) is more desirable as we will minimise the loss of lean tissue and will help promote diet adherence as we are not being too restrictive.
